On June 19, 2008, in Handwar, a local newspaper Etaalat reported about a Gujjar girl who was molested by three army men.

The family said some soldiers of 8 Raj Rifles who were on duty nearby also came to the spot. “Thus her chastity was saved,” they said
“Had we didn’t reached at the spot, the beasts would have outraged the chastity of our daughter,” the family told this newspaper.
Meanwhile, the incident has evoked massive condemnation from the local residents.  The nomadic Gujjars have threatened to vacate their dhokas and return to their villages. “Now our daughters are not safe here because of terror unleashed by soldiers and the government gunmen. When contacted, Army’s Srinagar-based spokesman Lt Col Mathur said that one of the accused troopers “is the relative of the girl.” He, however, denied the charges of molestation. “
